Why does IT impact small companies?

Twenty years ago, the small business could survive without technology embedded in their processes. It was possible to have manual procedures and keep all records in paper, thinking about technology just when the size of the operations exceeded the capacity of the company.

Today, that point of view has changed:
  • Many small companies have a website.
  • Owners and managers get mobile apps in order to be more productive.
  • More affordable POS systems with integration to other applications.
  • Small companies are looking for cloud solutions.
  • Small business presence in social media is essential.
  • Online shopping is gaining terrain over brick and mortar retail.
  • The habits of the consumers are changing, looking for a digital experience.
  • More shopping decisions are made online. More consumers look for information online before buying.
  • Small companies have more competitors because the location is not anymore a constraint when shopping.

And the list can continue. The facts are the world is changing and the companies that do not embrace the change are closing.

Small companies struggle to manage all new trends and the operation simultaneously.   Even if they hire IT consultants or companies they can not relay 100% on them; the small companies still require to understand what technology can do, evaluate technical solutions, control IT vendors, and translate business needs into technical solutions.

The challenge for small companies is embracing digital transformation. Owners and employees require to elevate their IT knowledge, apply best practices, and make educated decisions about technology.
